Unit 4: Facilitation and Evaluation

This week we spent some time discussing the the role of facilitator in education. In my job I see myself as a facilitator, but haven't previously thought much about how to be a strong facilitator and how that looks in different contexts. I think it would be difficult to transition to teaching fully online as it is a totally different dynamic and you don't typically get the same types of relationships you do when you see your students on a regular basis.

We were asked to reflect back on our previous online learning experiences. When I took a few minutes to think about it, I realized I have done a lot more online courses than I have realized. Most of the online courses I have done have been related to education, though there were a few that were not. The ones that weren't related to education had similar formats-- read, listen, and/or watch something, complete a multiple choice quiz, and go on to the next level and continue until all levels are complete. I suppose that serves a purpose, but is very different from the online learning I have done. I think online learning has changed even in the last 10 years. The first university course I took online was pretty basic and straight forward-- watch an online lecture, do readings, complete assignments. The courses that I have taken in the last 5 years all had a discussion component. Additionally, I have had more variety and choice in the content and the type of work and assignments. This could be because online education is changing, or it could also be the type of courses I am taking (education vs. undergrad elective courses).

Either way, I have had some positive online learning experiences, and some not so positive ones. This prompted me to create a list of what I like and need in an online facilitator and what is important to consider if/when going in the direction with my own students.

I pieced together what I valued in the ideal facilitator. As depicted above, I have also included a list below:
- present
- clear
- consistent
- thorough
- connected
- engaged
- active
- supportive

In this course I have noticed and appreciated the clarity, support, and feedback (frequent and immediate). These are characteristics that are especially important to me as a learner and I will strive to be these things to my students.

Unit 5: Next Steps...

The end is near! Sometimes I find that I have more thoughts and questions at the end of a course than the beginning. However, I don't think that that is a negative thing. I think that it means I have considered different thoughts and ideas, and am open to seeing where those lead.
